“Artistic Routes, from Gyzis to 20th century art in Greece”

This exhibition offers a digital tour of characteristic works from the collections of the Thessaloniki Municipal Gallery, as well as exhibitions that have taken place in recent years and constitute an important part of the city’s cultural identity.

The exhibition highlights the work of Nikolaos Gyzis, which marks the starting point of Modern Greek art and introduces us to creators of the New Greek State, whose works illustrate the chapters of 20th century art and reflect the process of shaping the visual identity and artistic orientations of the era, through a variety of paths.

It is a digital look at portraits of the Gyzi family, posters and diplomas, ethnographic themes, religious and allegorical compositions, still lifes, drawings, oil paintings and the characteristic “Zelatinas”.

Works by Nikolaos Gyzis, curated by art historian Konstantinos Didaskalou and exhibited on the first floor of the Digital Gallery, come from the collection of the Gyzis family, which was first presented in Thessaloniki in 1999. In 2001, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the artist’s death, the exhibition “Gyzis in Tinos” was held with the works from the collection and immediately afterwards the artist’s family donated the collection to the Gallery.

On the second floor of the Digital Gallery, works by Greek artists of the 20th century are exhibited.
